Army GI resisters Travis Bishop, Victor Agosto, and Dustin Stevens

Help provide civilian legal defense funds for military GI resisters with a house party, music show, poetry night, film showing, or by simply passing the hat at your next community/social/union meeting.

By Courage to Resist. May 29, 2009

Service members are courageously taking a stand against our nation’s endless occupation wars. Will you or your community organization step up to support them? These three Army soldiers are likely to face court martials—and a year or more in the stockade—possibly as early as July.

  • Victor Agosto—Ft. Hood, Texas (Specialist., US Army)
Awaiting likely court martial after publicly refusing to deploy to Afghanistan.
  • Travis Bishop—Ft. Hood, Texas (Sergeant, US Army)
Awaiting likely court martial after publicly refusing to deploy to Afghanistan
  • Dustin Stevens—Ft. Bragg, North Carolina (Private, US Army)
Awaiting court martial after refusing to graduate from Airborne school after concluding that he was a conscientious objector.

Courage to Resist has in the past raised funds for and covered the expenses of over a dozen GI resisters, including Cliff Cornell, Robin Long, and Agustin Aguayo. However, we believe a more decentralized effort right now can be more effective, and will unleash additional grassroots support for GI resisters.

House parties can be as simple as a donation jar at the door and shout out later in the evening, or can be more elaborate—including a possible phone call from one of the resisters. Poetry and film events can be built around a “war, resistance, and peace” theme.

We ask that all funds, minus the actual expenses incurred presenting the event, be donated to war resisters. Tax-deductible donations earmarked for Victor/Travis/Dustin can be made via Courage to Resist at couragetoresist.org/donate, or check/money order to: Courage to Resist, 484 Lake Park Ave #41, Oakland CA 94610

Donations can also be made directly to attorney James Branum. Mr. Branum is the civilian lawyer for these three courageous individuals. These contributions are not tax-deductible.

Please let us know what you are planning. We might be able to provide informational materials or other help.
