By Courage to Resist. May 6, 2011

Olivia Chow, a member of the Canadian Parliament from Toronto, is married to Jack Layton, the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), which nearly tripled its seats in Canada’s Parliament in this week’s elections. For the first time, the NDP achieved the status of the official opposition party. The NDP has been the Canadian political party that has been the strongest and most consistent supporter of U.S. war resisters seeking sanctuary there (photo right: Rodney Watson, sanctuary seeker). Our friends in Canada are hoping that this will mitigate the increased strength of the Conservative party which achieved a majority government for the first time. Here is MP Olivia Chow’s post-election statement of support for U.S. Iraq War resisters in Canada.
