  • Courage to Resist and the Vietnam Full Disclosure effort of Veterans for Peace are collecting first person accounts of "military resistance." We'll publish many of these stories at couragetoresist.org and vietnamfulldisclosure.org.

    Specifically, we are looking for:

    • Individuals that took a stand of some kind against war in general, or a specific war, while in uniform.
    • Individuals who refused to be drafted into the military.

Each answer field is intentionally limited to approximately one very long paragraph, but shorter answers are fine! If something doesn't apply to you, just say so.

The questionnaire is comprised primarily of a half dozen questions: 1) Your thoughts upon entering or refusing the military, 2) Defining moments that led up to taking action, 3) What did resistance look like for you, 4) Repercussions, 5) How did that experience change you, 6) Any related work your doing today.

You may find it easier to write your answers in a word processor and then copy your answers into the questionnaire. This also protects from loosing your work in case of poor Internet connectivity.

Our objective is to walk you through the sequence of events eliciting a concise story of your personal journey.

If you fit the bill, we hope you'll share your story!

  • Were you inducted into the US military? Regardless of time in service or discharge status, are you a military veteran?
  • Approximate is fine if you don't remember the exact date or would rather not share.
  • Approximate is fine if you don't remember the exact date or would rather not share.
  • What were you thinking when you entered the military, either having volunteered or having been drafted?

Maybe you were eager to volunteer. Maybe you were drafted. Maybe something in between.

  • What were you thinking when you refused induction? What led you to take such a courageous stand?

Maybe you were eager to volunteer. Maybe you were drafted. Maybe something in between.

  • Notable duty stations, tours, and/or locations deployed to.
  • What military units were you attached to?
  • What was your primary military occupation, job, specialty, and/or MOS?
  • What were a couple of the defining moments that led you to later stand against war, militarism, the military, or something similar, as you define it?
  • What were a couple of the defining personal moments or experiences of that time that informed your refusal to be drafted into the military?
  • What did resistance look like for you? What specific action and actions did you take to resist?
  • Was there a cost to be had for doing the right thing? What did it mean personally?
  • How did those actions inform and affect who you became afterwards?
  • What, if anything, are you doing today that is related to your past as a military resister?
  • If available, please upload a photo (or two) of yourself back then, in uniform if applicable. Photo file types accepted are JPG, JPEG, or PNG. Max file size allowed is 10MB.
