The biggest concern for most AWOL soldiers is whether the Army will try to find them while AWOL. In most cases, the Army will call the home of record of the soldier, the cell phone of the soldier (in my experience this is very common), and any numbers the command has of friends and family of the soldier. The best advice to give a soldier with regards to these calls is to remind family and friends that it potentially is a crime to lie to the military or law enforcement, but that it is not against the law to refuse to talk. One typical scenario that illustrates this: An AWOL soldier is staying at her parent’s house. Her drill sergeant calls the house and the soldier’s mother answers. If the mother says “My child isn't here,” she may have broken the law. However, if the mother says, “I have nothing to say to you and will not answer your questions,” she has not broken the law.

Courage to Resist. August 9, 2011
We were excited to be a part of the LA Rising music festival last Saturday, July 30. As part of the festival's "Re-Education Camp"--a collection of 30+ nonprofit organizations--we were able to highlight the international campaign to support accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower Bradley Manning. The festival was presented by Rage Against The Machine and also featured Lauryn Hill, Muse, and Rise Against, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Hundreds of folks, mainly between the ages of 16 and 26, signed up to be remain informed about our ongoing work in support of Bradley and all GI resisters. Tens of thousands of festival goers watched our Bradley Manning 100 second video on the massive video screens between set changes!

This morning we were shocked to learn of the arrest of Army PFC Naser Abdo (photo right), whom we supported in a bid to be released from the Army as a Conscientious Objector in August 2010. PFC Abdo was arrested in Killeen, Texas, yesterday for possessing firearms, ammunition, and bomb-making materials, in what media reports describe as a plan to “attack Fort Hood.”

Courage to Resist would like to extend support for those prisoners in Pelican Bay State Prison and all prisoners who are suffering unjust and atrocious confinement conditions. As you may or may not know, accused WikiLeaks whistle blower, Private First Class Bradley Manning, was held in similar solitary confinement conditions for nearly a year. Bradley Manning was subject to complete isolation 23 hours a day in a 6ft by 12ft windowless cell. Despite the recommendations of military psychiatrists, Bradley Manning was arbitrarily placed on suicide watch in which he was stripped of his clothing and bedding, made to stand at attention nude in the morning and evening, forced to wear an uncomfortable suicide smock and subject to many other humiliations and torments. These conditions amounted to physical and psychological torture. For years prisoners throughout the California and United States prison system have been subject to similar unjust and atrocious confinement conditions.

There’s a small lake shaped like a wishbone you’ve probably never heard of near the Canadian border that’s considered to be the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The river flows 2,340 miles from this point to the Gulf of Mexico, gathering in more waters as it becomes the great artery that drains and waters and sometimes floods the heart of our continent. Headwaters are often like that, a little-known spring or lake in an obscure place, the places where even the biggest rivers begin.

Michael Lyons sentenced to seven months' detention after developing moral objections to Afghanistan conflict
A Royal Navy medic has been sentenced to seven months' detention for refusing rifle training prior to deployment in Afghanistan after developing moral objections, following revelations made by WikiLeaks.
Michael Lyons, 25, was found guilty of wilful disobedience of a lawful order at a military hearing on Tuesday. He had served since 2005 as a medical assistant submariner. He was demoted and dismissed from the navy.

It has been a little over two months since PFC Manning was moved from Quantico to the Joint Regional Corrections Facility (JRCF) at Fort Leavenworth. Since being moved to the JRCF, PFC Manning's overall mood and demeanor has greatly improved. PFC Manning is able to maintain regular contact with his defense team. He receives weekly written updates, phone calls and visits from defense counsel. In addition, he receives regular visits from family. Finally, PFC Manning also receives hundreds of letters from supporters every week. He wishes to extend his sincere appreciation to those who have taken the time to send along their thoughts and well-wishes.
